Bacon Smashed Avocado Hot Cross Bun

Hot cross buns aren’t just for Easter, and they definitely aren’t just for sweet treats. This savoury twist is an absolute game-changer—crispy bacon, creamy smashed avocado, and a hint of spice, all packed into a toasted hot cross bun. Trust me, once you’ve tried this, you’ll never look at a hot cross bun the same way again.

Ingredients

  • 2 hot cross buns
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 4 rashers of smoked streaky bacon
  • 1 tsp chilli flakes (or more if you like a kick)
  • ½ lime, juiced
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Butter, for toasting

LET’S DIVE IN

  1. Get a frying pan on medium heat and cook the bacon until it’s golden and crispy. No shortcuts here—crispy is key. Once done, set aside on kitchen paper to drain.

  2. Scoop out the avocado into a bowl, squeeze in the lime juice, and sprinkle over the chilli flakes, sea salt, and black pepper. Give it a good mash with a fork—chunky or smooth, it’s up to you.

  3. Slice the hot cross buns in half and spread a little butter on each side. Toast them in a dry pan or under the grill until golden. That slight crunch makes all the difference.

  4. Spread a thick layer of smashed avocado on the bottom half of each bun, then pile on the crispy bacon. Pop the top on, press it down slightly. No cutlery needed, just grab it with both hands and enjoy every bite.
