Why Devon is the Ultimate Christmas Getaway

Why Devon?

Imagine quaint villages lit with twinkling lights, rolling hills providing the perfect backdrop for frosty morning walks, and the coastline echoing the peaceful winter sea. Not to mention the fantastic food and welcoming locals.

It’s the variety that gets me every year.

One moment, you’re enjoying the atmosphere of a bustling Christmas market, sipping mulled wine, and the next, enjoying a serene walk along a misty beach. Just like its scenery, Devon’s events are just as diverse.

And let’s not forget the people! There’s a warmth to the locals that adds that extra sparkle to the festivities.

Let’s dive into some of the amazing events held in Devon this Christmas.

1. Plymouth Winter Wonderland

I first stumbled upon Plymouth’s Winter Wonderland last year; let me tell you, it’s a game-changer. The sweet aroma of festive treats fills the air while the ice rink glistens under the stars – the atmosphere alone can be intoxicating.

Running from 24th November to 1st January, there’s plenty of time to get your slice of Christmas joy in Central Park, Plymouth.

Even more, there’s a tonne of extras, including Santa’s Grotto, a music arena and delicious food. It’s super popular, though! So make sure to book a spot on the ice rink in advance to save you some time queuing – it’s worth it for a whirl around the rink, trust me.

2. Polar Express Tram Ride with Seaton Tramway

Next on the list is something straight out of a Christmas storybook – the Polar Express Tram Ride at Seaton Tramway.

What’s better than boarding a tram decked out in festive glory with a nice hot drink in your hand?

If you have children, the magic continues as you can see their eyes twinkle with excitement as they meet Santa in his grotto and receive a small gift. It is a heartwarming experience that can be the perfect bow on a great Christmas day.

Seats typically fill up quicker on Christmas Eve, so book early to avoid disappointment.

3. Christmas Garden Illuminations at RHS Garden Rosemoor

Whatever you think you know about light displays, throw it out the window.

Nowhere does a light display quite like RHS Garden Rosemoor and its garden illuminations. Think of a winter wonderland coming alive. The first time I wandered through, I felt like I had entered a fairytale – entering a door to Narnia is a good representation.

The glow trail’s blend of lights and sounds makes it perfect for families or a romantic evening stroll. Don’t forget to grab a hot drink – the ideal companion on your walk.

The Christmas Garden illuminations are VERY popular, so check dates and book in advance. It offers a unique experience different from those on this list.

4. Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market

What is Christmas without a Christmas Market?

A visit to Devon during the holidays just isn’t complete without stopping by Exeter Cathedral Christmas Market. Wooden chalets inspired by famous traditional German markets on the backdrop of a historic cathedral are a festive dream.

Crafts, gifts, delicious food, it’s all a sensory delight.

The atmosphere here is buzzing, and you can immediately tell how into the festive cheer everyone is. You can also hear carol singers’ and enjoy a wide range of different foods and treats.

The market is open from 17th November to 17th December, so pop in for some Devon Christmas spirit.

5. Yuletide Devon

Now, for something a bit different – Yuletide Devon

Who says Christmas isn’t the time for a music festival? Not Devon, that’s for sure.

It runs from 24th November to Dev 31 and is terrific fun. You can hop on some free rides, enjoy live music daily and get your shop on at the market. The live music really sets this event apart; from local favourites to national touring musicians, the lineup is always stellar.

Music, rides, lights, food – what isn’t there to love?

6. GloWild at Paignton Zoo

Looking for something a bit more wild?

Check out Glowild at Paignton Zoo – an immersive light show journey. From 17th November to 2nd January, you can experience a zoo transformed into a luminescent wonderland.

Surround yourself with giant illuminated animals, dazzling light tunnels and a silent disco – which is more remarkable than it sounds!

GloWild is an unforgettable evening out for the whole family, and I always try to add it to my Christmas itinerary.

7. The Biffen’s Kitchen Christmas Menu

And now, for our very own festive special – The Biffen’s Kitchen Christmas Menu!

This is our little slice of holiday cheer, and I’m thrilled to invite you on 16th December at Lobb Fields Campsite in Braunton from 12:00 – 19:30 for a day filled with good food, great company, and a lot of festive spirit.

We’ve created a menu that will tickle your taste buds and warm your heart.

Christmas bao buns, loaded Xmas puffs, and our showstoppers – the Hog Burger & Vegan Grinch Burger are up for grabs.

Trust me, they are as delicious as they sound!

And to drink?
