Dogs in Devon: Dog-friendly Accommodation

With its sprawling coastlines, lush green countryside and historic landmarks, Devon stands out as a perfect tourist location in the UK. Its rich cultural heritage draws visitors from near and far, including those who walk on all fours.

In recent years, I’ve been seeing more and more travellers bringing their pets along for the journey.

And I’ll never turn down the chance to meet an energised lil pup!

There is plenty more to see in the world for our furry companions; after all, dogs are part of our family, and leaving them behind can be heart-wrenching. Fortunately, travellers will find plenty of pet-friendly accommodation throughout Devon as it embraces the bond between owner and companion.

Let’s dive deeper into the pet-friendly accommodation in Devon and look at some things to consider when bringing your pet on holiday.

Types of Dog-friendly Accommodation in Devon

Devon offers a diverse range of accommodation catering to canine companions as it does a diverse range of picturesque landscapes.

Depending on the specific location you’re visiting, you may have different options available.

For example, you may find a range of dog-friendly cottages in Croyde but different options elsewhere. A particular accommodation option may better suit your planned activities and travel availabilities. Here’s what to expect when looking for pet-friendly accommodation:

Hotels

Nothing screams a holiday quite like a luxurious stay in a hotel. I’ve been to a few hotels around Devon, and they’re always a fantastic stay – several even cater to your doggy companion. Some establishments offer special dog amenities like dog beds, treats and spa services.

Bed & Breakfasts (B&Bs)

B&Bs offer a cosy, home-like atmosphere, many of which are run and owned by dog owners who understand the needs of pets and their owners. It’s not uncommon for B&B owners in Devon to accept pets – but it’s best to check before booking that this is the case.

Cottages & Holiday Homes

If there’s one thing Devon definitely has other than beaches, it’s beautiful cottages. Similarly, holiday homes are a staple for families or groups travelling with their pets. Many have gardens and enclosed outdoor spaces, perfect for a furry companion in the middle of zoomies. Croyde, in particular, has a great selection of homey cottages, all pet-friendly.

Campsites

For the adventurous types, Devon boasts several campsites that welcome dogs. Campsites can be an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in nature and the environment with your best friend by your side. It also gives them an opportunity to feel more free during your stay.

Top Dog-friendly Accommodation in Devon

What makes holiday accommodation great is its service, location and for us, whether it’s dog-friendly or not. I’ve put together some of my recommendations on dog-friendly accommodation around Devon to save you some time on planning if you’re venturing close to their location.

I’ve also added a cottage section so you can find the best suited for your travel destination – just in case I didn’t cover one close to where you’re going.

1. The Mole

What dog doesn’t love a breathtaking countryside where they can roam to their heart’s content?

The Mole’s beautiful location in North Devon provides glistening sunshine and rolling hills in every direction. Best of all, they’re dog-friendly and generously so. Their stunning luxury lodges offer much-needed space for you, your family and for man’s best friend.

I can’t list a more dog-friendly host if I tried. Each stay includes a dog bowl and towel, plant-based treats, sustainable waste bags, a hemp toy and a blanket; wow!

Talk about going the extra mile.

2. Boringdon Hall Hotel

Boringdon Hall Hotel, located on the outskirts of Dartmoor, is a perfect stop for a Devon getaway. As they say, your four-legged friend will be “treated like royalty”.

Don’t let the name confuse you; it’s everything but boring.

Among the many walking trails on their doorstep, Boringdon Hall Hotel also caters specifically to your companion by offering blankets, dog beds, poo bags and treats. While their restaurants may not be dog-friendly, limited space is available in the Grenville for dining with your dog.

Just make sure to book in time with reception!

3. The Imperial Torquay

Commanding a cliff-top position, The Imperial Torquay is a historic property with a beautiful sea view. If you’re looking for a getaway with a Victorian flair, you’re in the right place!

However, if you bring your dog, you will stay in a designated room on their beautiful garden level. While you won’t have full hotel access while travelling with your furry companion, you are provided with a dog bed and water bowl.

Their rooms provide a much-needed and relaxing sanctuary after a day of travel.

4. Lobb Fields Caravan and Camping Park

If, like me, a spot near the coast is more appealing, then Lobb Fields camping park is a spectacular option. With Saunton Sands – the only all-year-round dog-friendly beach in North Devon – right on the doorstep, your dog can have the time of their life roaming the cost.

For the adventurous, you can hire a surfboard and join me on the waves of Croyde, Putsborough and Woolacombe beaches.

You can also take your companion for a stroll around the park’s dedicated dog walk – The camping park also hosts a range of dog-friendly eateries, including us!

You can find Biffen’s Kitchen at Lobb Fields from October to March, and we welcome all pets.

5. Dog-Friendly Cottages

I mentioned that cottages are a great option if you want something with a homey vibe and dog-friendly surroundings. Cottages are the best option when looking for something other than the mainline hotels or campsite locations.

If you’re struggling to find options yourself, I suggest looking through Canine Cottage’s brilliant dog-friendly cottage options via their search aggregator.

Not only do they list the appealing details for each cottage, such as price, location and need-to-know information, but they also include dog-specific information, helping you decide on the best option for you during your Devon visit.

Dog-friendly Devon Holidays Await

Finding suitable accommodation on any holiday isn’t just about convenience; it’s about creating lasting memories with your companion. Strolling on the beach, hiking along dedicated trails and relaxing are all made better by knowing dog-friendly options surround you.

Devon itself is a spectacle. Each time I travel around, I’m amazed by all the small locations and hidden away gems that wow me. Exploring Devon will surely add a unique dimension to your travels with your dog by your side.

Before packing your bags and dog collar and setting off for Devon, don’t forget to add Biffen’s Kitchen to your itinerary. Warm up with our delicious winter menu, perfect for you and a nice little treat for your dog.

You can find us at Lobb Fields Caravan and Camping Park in Braunton from October to March and at Ocean Pitch Campsite in Croyde from Easter to October.
