Easter Hot Cross Bun Bread Sauce

Try my Hot Cross Bun Bread Sauce this Easter! I mean, traditional bread sauce is one of the great, classic British sauces enjoyed over Christmas, but why can’t you enjoy it over an Easter roast dinner? My hot cross bun bread sauce is packed with delicious flavour and is super simple to make. It is also a great way to use up leftover hot cross buns.

Ingredients

  • 300ml milk
  • 150ml double cream
  • 20g unsalted butter
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 large onion
  • 4 hot cross buns
  • Salt, to taste

Let’s Dive In!

Stage 1 - Cook the onion

Finely chop the onion and cook in a saucepan over medium heat with the butter for 5 minutes, until softened.

1 large onion

20g unsalted butter

Stage 2 - Infuse the Milk

Pour the milk, double cream, nutmeg, and salt into a large saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat, then turn off the heat and let it sit for 7 minutes to allow the flavours to infuse.

300ml milk

150ml double cream

½ tsp ground nutmeg

Salt

Stage 3 - Add the Hot Cross Buns & Blend

Roughly chop or blitz the hot cross buns in a food processor until they form fine crumbs. Stir them into the infused milk mixture, ensuring they are fully combined. The sauce should thicken to a smooth, velvety texture, ready to serve alongside your Easter roast lamb dinner.

4 hot cross buns

BIFF, BOSH, NOSH!

Quick Biff Tip

  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or cloves for more warmth.
  • If the sauce is too thick, loosen it with a splash of warm milk before serving.
  • Make it sweet! Remove the onion and add chocolate chips or apple chunks.
