Guide to Braunton Beaches
Braunton Beaches is for you—a stretch of North Devon’s finest coastline that keeps me coming back for more. Whether I’m here to surf, relax, or just take it all in, it’s impossible not to fall in love with the seaside all over again.
So, what makes these beaches so special? Let’s dive in.
Discovering Braunton Beaches
Braunton’s coastline has a bit of everything—golden sands, hidden coves, and rugged beauty all in one.
If you’re into adventure, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Surfing, paddleboarding, kayaking, and swimming are all on offer. If you’re more about the slower pace of life, the beaches here are perfect for sunbathing, long walks, or just sitting back with a coffee.
For me, it’s always a mix of both. Some days, I’m straight into the water. Other days, I’m happy to just sit on the sand, watching the waves roll in.
Saunton Sands Beach
You can’t talk about Braunton’s beaches without mentioning Saunton Sands.
This place is massive—miles of golden sand, rolling dunes, and some of the most consistent waves in the UK. If you surf, this is where you want to be. If you don’t, it’s still a great spot to watch the pros do their thing.
Whether it’s swimming, building sandcastles, or just taking a long walk along the shoreline, Saunton never disappoints. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot some local wildlife. Dolphins have been known to make an appearance.
Hidden Gems of Braunton
I know what you’re thinking.
"Yeah, yeah, we all know about Saunton. But what about the secret spots?"
There are a few places I always recommend when someone’s looking for a quieter beach experience.
Crow Point is where the estuary meets the sea, creating a totally different vibe from your usual beach day. It’s peaceful, the views are incredible, and it’s the kind of place where you feel like you’ve escaped.
Rockham Bay has a real hidden cove feel to it. It’s got dramatic cliffs, rock pools, and that feeling of discovering somewhere special. Whether you’re looking for an adventure or just some space away from the crowds, it’s a spot worth checking out.
Mouthmill Beach is another lesser-known spot but one of the best. If you’re after total peace and quiet, this is the place to go. It’s a bit of a trek to get to, but that’s part of the charm.
Dog-Friendly Beaches
One of the best things about Braunton’s beaches is how dog-friendly they are.
Plenty of them allow dogs all year round, which means no need to leave your four-legged mate behind. There’s loads of space, so even on busy days, it never feels too crowded. If you’re planning a longer stay, there are plenty of dog-friendly places to stay nearby too.
Easy Access and Facilities
Braunton Beaches are all about laid-back vibes and easy access.
There are plenty of entry points, making them accessible for everyone. Public restrooms, picnic areas, and nearby cafes mean you can settle in for the whole day without any hassle. It’s one of those places where everything just feels easy.
Beaches Beyond Braunton
If you fancy exploring further, North Devon has even more to offer.
Woolacombe is just up the coast, with three miles of golden sand and some of the best waves around. It’s always a great day out.
Ilfracombe is totally different, with hidden coves, dramatic cliffs, and a bit of Victorian charm. It’s got great seafood too.
Croyde is all about surf culture and buzzing beach town vibes. It’s where you’ll find me most of the time, serving up breakfast barrels and street food at Biffen’s Kitchen.
Bideford is a bit more about history and coastal walks, but if you’re looking for something different, it’s worth checking out.
Why Braunton Beaches Should Be on Your Travel List
The thing about North Devon is that you never feel like you’re done exploring. Every visit is another chance to find a new favourite beach, catch an epic sunset, or discover a hidden spot you never knew existed.
Whether you’re here for the waves, the wildlife, the walks, or just some time to switch off, Braunton’s beaches deliver.
Before you head out, check if your chosen beach has any specific rules or seasonal restrictions. Some spots have dog bans at certain times of the year, and others don’t allow BBQs or fires. A quick search saves you any surprises and makes for a stress-free beach day.
And if you find yourself in Croyde, come by Biffen’s Kitchen. I’ll sort you out with a breakfast barrel or a post-surf feed that’ll hit the spot.
See you by the sea.
